If you’re anything like me, figuring out how to overcome negative self-talk can be a struggle. Some days the stream of ugly thoughts toward myself just never seems to run dry.
But I recently got a little revelation and want to pass it along to you!
Now a little disclaimer: Videos are so not my thing. Seeing myself on camera usually makes my skin crawl. And let me just say, I was a hot mess this morning when I recorded it. But God laid it on my heart to just be real with you guys, in all my imperfect glory.
Speak it to Change it
First of all, oh my goodness, guys… look at my face!
Second, as promised, I want to share my list with you:

Take the Blinders Off
When you’re making your list, don’t make the same mistake I’ve made before. This isn’t the first time I’ve wanted to change the way I thought about myself. But when I’d sit down to think of affirmations or to ask God who I am and what He thinks about me, I was always coming from a very weak and negative place. I already had all these preconceived notions about who I was (or who I wasn’t) that were creating blinders to the the truth that God wanted to pour into me.Take your blinders off, and let God show you who you truly are!Click To Tweet
So I would come up with a few things that were okay. But I didn’t feel them down deep in my gut, and I ended up not getting much out of it. Then I’d go about my not-so-merry way, still speaking ugly things about myself.
If you’re having trouble taking your blinders off, pause for a minute and think of how you wish you could see yourself. Chances are, those deep longings down in your heart that you dare not think for fear of them not being true, are the truth.
Overcome Negative Self-Talk
Getting all of those Eeyore thoughts out of our minds and our mouths is going to take some effort, especially if its become second nature (like it has for me). So for this challenge, we need to do two things:
- Read our lists out loud every morning to start the day and
- Use them to speak against any negative thing that tries to creep out of our lips as the day goes on.
It’s important that we actually say them out loud to break their hold in our minds. We’ve been speaking death over ourselves. Now it’s time to speak life.
Remember THIS About Your List…
But here’s the thing about this list…
It’s not a set of rules! Don’t take it and turn it into something you’re trying to keep or some goal you’re striving for. That’s not the purpose of this. What we’re doing with the list is giving ourselves a written reminder. A hard copy of truth that we can read out loud every day to combat all those yucky junk thoughts and words we’ve kept about ourselves.God thinks so many good thoughts toward us that they outnumber the grains of sand. On every beach. Around the globe. Let that sink in...Click To Tweet
Because here’s the bottom line: those negative thoughts aren’t reality. God’s thoughts toward us are nothing like our thoughts toward ourselves. His thoughts toward us are good and peaceful, not evil (Jeremiah 29:11), and they outnumber the grains of sand on the shore (Psalm 139:17-18). He has so many positive thoughts about us, and they’re the truth! So this list is our way of taking time daily to just agree with Him.
If we mess up and do something that doesn’t fall into line with who we actually are (or that’s contrary to what we’ve written down), let’s not beat ourselves up about it. We can acknowledge it, confront it with the truth, and surrender it to God! There’s no need to dwell or beat ourselves up. We give it to God and move on.
Can you do that with me?
Alright, you guys have a great week, and I look forward to getting emails from anyone who’s interested in locking arms with me on this. If it’s something you struggle with and want someone to pray for you, I’d love to be that person. Just input your info and message in the “Contact Me” section below. (I’ll be the only one reading it and will not pass on your information to anyone else.)
Until next time,
