Inside: Nineteen worship songs to help you feel your connection with God (early 2018)
We all have those days when we struggle to feel connected to God (even though we always are). There’s something powerful in music and the way it resonates with our souls, so I’ve compiled a playlist of some of my favorite worship songs that always remind me of my connection with the Lover of my soul.
My Playlist: Worship Songs for Connection
You Came (Lazarus) by Jonathan David & Melissa Helser
You stood outside my grave
With tears still on Your face I heard You say my name
My night was turned to day
What better picture of what Jesus does for us than the story of Lazarus? I love the image of Him standing outside the grave and weeping. Even though Jesus knew exactly what He was about to do, He was still moved to tears with compassion. We were dead and rotting in the grave until He called us out of our darkness and into the family of God!
Confident by Steffany Gretzinger (feat. Bobby Strand)
You’re always moving in the unseen
The breath You exhale sustaining me
Before I call, You know my need
You’re always going before me
Every breath in our lungs was given by Him to give us life. Some days, just focusing on that helps me feel the deep connection I have with Him.
I won’t win this battle with the strength in my own hands
You’re the mountain-mover and only You can
So Will I (100 Billion X) by Hillsong UNITED
God of salvation
You chased down my heart
Through all of my failure and pride
On a hill You created
The light of the world
Abandoned in darkness to die
Right now, this is my favorite song by a landslide. By the end, I’m always bawling uncontrollably like I did the first time I heard it. In Him, failure isn’t failure anymore. In Him, we have life where there once was death. And in Him, we get to live like Him and bring others to Him.
And as You speak
A hundred billion failures disappear
Where You lost Your life so I could find it here
If You left the grave behind You so will I
No Longer Slaves by Jonathan David & Melissa Helser
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’ve always loved this song. But now every time I hear it, I think of a trip that my husband and I took to Alaska for a conference. To say I was nervous about the plane ride would be an understatement. I had only flown once before, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience (I’m lookin’ at you, TURBULENCE), so I was terrified. As our plane started to roll down the runway, my back was glued firmly to my seat, hands gripping the armrests, heart pounding out of my chest, and I may have been sweating more than I’d like to admit.
Suddenly, this song came into my mind. I started singing it under my breath as our plane lifted into the air, and by the time we were above the clouds, my heart was at peace. I wasn’t a slave to my fear but a child of God, looking down on her Father’s creation in wonder.
It’s so amazing how He’s faithful to help us overcome even our small fears. We can certainly trust Him with all the big ones.
From my Mothers womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again, into your family
Your blood flows through my veins
Tremble by Mosaic MSC
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
I actually first heard this song from watching Upper Room Worship videos on Youtube. Ever heard of them before? If not go check out some of their stuff! I highly recommend their version of Worthy of it All. Listen to it by clicking the link!
My favorite part of this song is probably the bridge. Check out these lyrics:
Your name is a light that the shadows can’t deny
Your name cannot be overcome
Your name is alive forever lifted high
Your name cannot be overcome
Even When it Hurts (Praise Song) by Hillsong UNITED
Take this mountain weight
Take these ocean tears
Hold me through the trial
Come like hope again
Ah, the song with the oh-so-controversial lyric. Some people lost their minds over Taya singing, “even when it hurts like hell, I’ll praise You.”
But ya know, if we truly believe hell is a real place of immense torture, why can’t we relate to those lyrics? To me, it was her best way of describing immeasurable pain and suffering. I mean, if something can hurt like hell and in the midst of that pain, we still choose to praise Him, I think that says something. More than a plain Jane lyric would say there.
Even when the fight seems lost
I’ll praise You
Even when it hurts like hell
I’ll praise You
Even when it makes no sense to sing
Louder then I’ll sing Your praise
Reckless Love by Cory Asbury
UPDATE: I’m no longer a huge fan of this song. I know… unpopular opinion. But the truth is, God’s love isn’t reckless at all. It’s done with intention, purpose, and thought. When we actually look at what reckless means, none of it characterizes God’s love for us. I get it–to us, the fact that He would leave the 99 for the 1 seems reckless. But that’s never God.
When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so good to me
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me
You have been so, so kind to me
We were against Him, yet He fought for us. We did things that made us feel worthless, yet He called us a treasure worth the highest price. What could make us feel more connected than that?
There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me
Out of Hiding (Father’s Song) by Steffany Gretzinger
‘Cause I loved you before you knew what was love
I saw it all, still I chose the cross
You were the one that I was thinking of
When I rose from the grave
Now rid of the shackles, My victory is yours
I tore the veil for you to come close
There’s no reason to stand at a distance anymore
You’re not far from home
It may be older than some of the other songs on the list, but it’s just SO DARN GOOD. Really, this whole album is! If you’ve never heard it before, I highly recommend it. It’s called The Undoing, and it was my first introduction to Steffany Gretzinger. Never heard of her either? God blessed her with a true gift for lyrically connecting the dots in the hearts of her listeners. Listen to this song (written from God’s perspective), and you’ll see what I mean!
I’ll be your lighthouse when you’re lost at sea
I will illuminate everything
No need to be frightened by intimacy
Just throw off your fear and come running to me
What a Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship
My sin was great Your love was greater
What could separate us now
Pretty much everyone knows and loves this song. I mean, what is there not to love? I always get hyped by the time the bridge rolls around.
You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names
Grace to Grace by Hillsong Worship
My chains are gone
My debt is paid
From death to life
And grace to grace
Grace to Grace is another knock-out from Hillsong Worship. The lyrics and just general way it sounds and feels land it on my top favorites.
When I see that cross I see freedom
When I see that grave I’ll see Jesus
And from death to life
I will sing Your praise
In the wonder of Your grace
Love has a Name by Jesus Culture (feat. Kim Walker Smith)
There’s a space in every beating heart
There’s a longing that reaches past the stars
There’s an answer to every question mark
There’s a name
Such a great song! Love is a person. Victory was won in a person. Our true joy can only be found in one person. He’s the answer to every question inside of us and the picture when all the puzzle pieces are joined together. It’s all Jesus.
There’s a joy that triumphs over fear
There’s a laughter that wipes away all tears
There’s a presence that changes atmospheres
There’s a name
Catch the Wind by Jonathan David & Melissa Helser
I am bold, no fear inside
Spread my wings, open my life
Like an eagle, whose home is the sky
I’m gonna catch the wind, I’m gonna catch the wind
This song is my declaration! I start to sing it any time I start to feel unsure of myself. I may not have it all together on my own, but God is faithful. He’s got this, and with Him, I’m bold and strong.
Like standing on the edge of a mountainside
I can feel the wind stirring, lifting me up high
I was born into freedom, I was made to fly
You Don’t Miss a Thing by Amanda Cook
What a wondrous thing
I can stand to sing
Cause when I fall to my knees,
You’re the one who pulls me up again
This song was one of the very first worship songs I ever felt truly connected to. I think it was the line that says, “when I’m misunderstood Your love understands me,” that did it for me.
I was someone who placed myself behind so many walls that the person I portrayed myself as in public was nothing like me at all. God is still working greater levels of authenticity in me, but I’ve come a long way from where I was.
Back before I saw any change, it was a comfort for me to know that even though no one else understood me, He did. No one else could see inside my heart, but He could. I was busy trying to make myself blend in with my surroundings, yet He saw me. That’s where my revelation of my connection with Him started.
There’s no place I can go Your love won’t find me
No place I can hide that You don’t see
When I’m misunderstood Your love understands me
You see it all, You see it all, You’re in everything
Let it Happen by United Pursuit (feat. Andrea Marie)
You’re full of life now
And full of passion
That’s how he made you
Just let it happen
My oldest son LOVES this song, and so do I. It’s all about being exactly who He created each of us to be.
And he calls each one of us
By our names to come away
And he whispers to your heart
To let it go and to be alive
Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace) by Hillsong Worship
All these pieces
Broken and scattered
In mercy gathered
Mended and whole
I love that Hillsong takes the classic, Amazing Grace, and merges it with new lyrics to make this song. It’s such a great picture of what He did for us. Without Him, we’re broken. But He chose to put the treasure of His Spirit within us anyway by His amazing grace.
You take our failure
You take our weakness
You set Your treasure
In jars of clay
King of My Heart by Bethel Music (feat. Steffany Gretzinger & Jeremy Riddle)
Let the King of my heart be the shadow where I hide
The ransom for my life; oh, He is my song
He is good and always good, and this song is a great reminder.
You’re never gonna let, never gonna let me down
Simple Gospel by United Pursuit
I’m laying down all my religion
I’m laying down
I want to you know you, Lord
The truth of the gospel is so simple and sweet, yet our minds have a tendency to reach for rituals and self-righteousness, especially if that’s what we were raised in. But that’s not what following Jesus is about. Instead, God is all about relationship and transforming us through His Spirit.
Lord, I’ve been told to be ashamed
Lord, I’ve been told I don’t measure up
Lord, I’ve been told I’m not good enough
But you’re here with me
Build My Life by Housefires
Jesus, the only One who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
The revelation of everything He is and everything He has done and will do within us brings us to a place of wanting to build our entire lives on Him and His love.
And, as worship songs go, you can’t go wrong with Housefires!
And I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
And I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
Clean by Natalie Grant
I see shattered
You see whole
I see broken
But You see beautiful
And You’re helping me to believe
You’re restoring me piece by piece
There’s no way I could leave this one out. Ever feel like you’re the one who has gone too far to be accepted as you are? Like you’re too broken? You’ve done too much?
There’s nothing too dirty
that You can’t make worthy
You wash me in mercy
I am clean
We’ve all fallen short of perfection. It’s just not something that’s attainable (especially when we’re striving for it). Then walks in Jesus and says, “I’ll fulfill what they can’t. I’ll do it all for them. And then I’ll die in their place so they can have mine.” We may have been dirty. We may still make wrong choices after accepting Jesus. But what He did made us clean, and He’ll help us with any struggle we face.
Washed in the blood of Your sacrifice
Your blood flowed red and made me white
My dirty rags are purified
I am clean
I hope you love this playlist as much as I do!
